A Railroad Town With Storm History
Spray Foam Insulation in Fort Branch serves the largest town in Gibson County. Fort Branch started in 1852 when the railroad came through; first called LaGrange, it was renamed to commemorate an old fort. The town had 2,965 residents in 2020 and 1,395 housing units, 8.3% vacant. For about 90 years its largest employer was the Emge Foods plant, which closed in 1999 just as Toyota announced its plant between Fort Branch and Princeton.
Storms
An F3 tornado passed through town on April 3, 1989, and an EF3 wedge tornado passed just north of town on February 28, 2017, damaging structures along Indiana 168. Homes repaired after those storms may have newer roofs and disturbed attic insulation.
Housing
Older homes from the railroad and packing-plant years sit alongside newer houses built as Toyota workers moved to the area. Older homes need attic sealing and rim joist work; newer homes often need bonus room foam and attic top-ups.
Farm buildings
Gibson County farms have plenty of pole barns and shops, where closed-cell foam on the steel stops condensation.
Costs
HomeGuide lists closed-cell foam at $3.00 to $5.00 per square foot and a typical attic job at $1,000 to $2,700 nationally. The written estimate after our visit is the price.
Before and after Toyota
The Toyota plant brought new residents to Fort Branch, many of whom moved into newer homes on the edges of town. Older homes near the railroad line have more character and more air leaks. We look at both kinds differently: older homes start with sealing, newer ones with attic depth and bonus rooms.
