Crawl Spaces in a Humid River Valley
Crawl space insulation and encapsulation in Evansville fix problems from both seasons. In summer, humid outdoor air flows through open foundation vents and condenses on cooler pipes, ducts and floor framing. Bare dirt adds more moisture. In winter, cold air through the same vents chills the floor above and can freeze pipes. Fiberglass batts between the floor joists get damp, sag and fall. Sealing the crawl space from the outdoors and from the ground, then insulating its walls, deals with both.
What encapsulation includes
A heavy vapor barrier covers the ground, runs up the foundation walls and is sealed at seams and piers. Foundation vents and the access door get sealed. The space then needs a way to stay dry, usually a dehumidifier or a small supply of conditioned air. If water collects after storms, drainage or a sump comes first. HomeGuide's 2026 encapsulation guide lists $3 to $10 per square foot, or $3,000 to $15,000 for a typical job, with a vapor barrier alone at $1,200 to $4,000.
Insulating the walls and rim
In a sealed crawl space, insulation moves to the foundation walls and the rim joist. The Insulation Institute's summary of the 2020 Indiana Residential Code lists R-13 cavity or R-10 continuous for crawl space walls in Climate Zone 4. Closed-cell foam meets the continuous target in about two inches, seals air, and does not absorb water. HomeGuide lists closed-cell on crawl space walls at $2 to $5 per square foot.
Or insulating the floor
If a crawl space stays vented and reasonably dry, insulating the floor above can work. ENERGY STAR recommends R-19 for floors in Zone 4A. Batts need to be held tight to the subfloor and the ducts and pipes protected. In a damp vented crawl space, though, floor insulation tends to fail, so we usually recommend dealing with the moisture first.
Signs it needs attention
- Musty smell indoors, especially in summer
- Sagging, wet or fallen batts
- Sweating ducts or pipes
- Cold floors in winter
- Standing water after rain
- Rust on metal parts, or signs of pests
Old and new crawl spaces
Older Tri-State houses often have low, uneven crawl spaces with brick or stone piers. Newer homes usually have taller, poured walls. Both can be encapsulated; older ones need more prep.

Crawl Space Insulation & Encapsulation Questions
Is encapsulation worth it in Indiana?
In a damp crawl space, usually. It cuts musty air and condensation and warms floors. It depends on how wet the space is now.
Do I need a dehumidifier?
A sealed crawl space needs a way to stay dry: a dehumidifier or conditioned air.
Will this help with frozen pipes?
Sealing vents and insulating the walls keeps the crawl space warmer in winter, which helps protect pipes.
What about termite inspections?
Ask your pest company what they need. Some want an inspection gap at the top of wall insulation.
